When the Urinary System Doesn't Work
Bladder Problems
A lot of different things affect the body's ability to hold urine in the bladder and to empty the bladder.  Sometimes, things don't work the way they should.  The most common causes of problems in controlling the bladder are illness, injury or ageing.

Causes can be divided into four groups:

  • Incontinence – inability to hold urine in the bladder
  • Retention – inability to empty bladder
  • A combination of incontinence and retention
  • Neurogenic bladder dysfunction
