Children who urinate the normal way usually go to the toilet 5 - 7 times a day. The best thing is to try and follow the same pattern when using a catheter.
When the bladder is emptied frequently, the risk of complications such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) is reduced. Your urology nurse will discuss your routine with you and you will be able to work out your child’s catheterisation schedule with them.
If you are careful about emptying the bladder, it might even begin to function normally again. This is not possible for everyone. However, after certain illnesses and injuries the body may recuperate and the bladder can regain 'normal' functionality.
