The method of emptying your bladder using a catheter has been around for thousands of years.
Before LoFric Catheters were introduced in the early 1980s, only plastic catheters without coating were available. Lubricant gels were applied to the catheter's surface but these didn't sufficiently reduce friction and the gel tended to disappear from the surface of the catheter when it was inserted, causing trauma on removal. Additionally gels made the procedure messy.
