Testimonials and Comments on LoFric products and services from Healthcare Professionals

Continence Adviser, South West
LoFric Primo is definitely a product with options for all… some of my patients are understandably very reluctant to learn ISC and the catheter used for teaching can make such a massive difference. I taught an elderly patient yesterday, who was scared, nervous and a little bit stubborn but he was so impressed with Primo, he could not believe how easy and comfortable it was to use!

Urology Nurse Specialist, North London
LoFric Primo is a very convenient product for patients doing ISC. The catheter is in an all in one system and there is less infection associated with it. The drainage eyes are the smoothest on the market and I do test the eyes on catheters to check for ease of insertion because this is important especially for females that have never been catheterised. A catheter should glide in with ease and LoFric catheters do this.

The packaging is very safe and has no sharp edges, I like the way the female length can fit nicely into your handbag. The catheter is also not messy and contains no gel or other substances, which means clean hands after catheterisation. All my patients have benefitted from LoFric catheters and I offer them as my first line treatment from the elderly to the young for every day use.

Mary White, Independent Specialist Continence Adviser to Astra Tech
To be told that you have to self catheterise every day, possibly for the rest of your life, may be so alarming that you fail to ‘hear’ the rationale and the reassuring advice and information which follows. In order to understand the Why? How? and Where? Of Intermittent Self Catheterisation (ISC) as a therapy, we need to feel relaxed, free of pressure and able to ask as many questions as necessary. Above all, we need to feel supported and able to make contact with our nurse specialist in order to obtain answers to those questions which may arise later.

Where were you when you were told? How did you feel? Did you feel able to ask questions? Do you think your nurse specialist had sufficient time to give you? Do you have access to an adviser? The Astra Tech Helpline deals with a great many enquiries but by far the most are those from users who do not understand why they have to perform self catheterisation. Indeed, they may still be asking ‘Why Me?’

It follows therefore that if they have not understood why, they will be tempted to try to manage without using a catheter, take short cuts and will invariably get into trouble. This leads to a belief that the therapy does not work and a feeling of isolation and failure. If they do not have a named person who has been identified as a source of help and ongoing support, they have nowhere to go with their concerns.

At Astra Tech, we believe that success is dependent upon therapists who are able to take the time to listen, establish the reason why ISC has been recommended, explain the rationale and help the individual to decide upon the most convenient times in the day to pass their catheter, empty their bladder and enjoy the freedom, self confidence and improved health that goes with a successful regime.

The skilled therapist will also advise on a healthy diet, adequate fluid intake, bowel routine and other related life issues.

Intermittent Self Catheterisation can be a life changing therapy when an appropriate personalised regime is in place. So if you are not sure why you have to self catheterise, if you are finding it physically difficult to perform or your toilet facility is inadequate, seek advice from your nurse specialist. They will be able to advise on all of these aspects and others at follow up consultations.

The most commonly asked questions are:
· How often should I catheterise?
· How much fluid should I drink?
· Do I need to use sterile water?
· What do I do when I am out and about?

Astra Tech has a family of hydrophilic catheters designed to meet your changing needs. You may wish to use different catheters in different situations.
