The job of the urinary system is to lead urine away from your kidneys and out of your body. The system is divided into the upper and lower urinary systems.
The upper system contains the kidneys, the renal pelvis and two ureters. The lower system is the bladder and the urethra.

Urine is a waste product that comes from your kidneys (1). Your urine is guided via the renal pelvis to the ureters (2). Every so often the ureters press the urine down into the bladder (3).
Once it reaches the bladder, your urine gathers there. When your bladder contains about 200ml of urine, it will usually signal your brain to say that it’s filling up.
Your bladder can hold about 400 – 600ml of urine but most of us go to the toilet before it fills up that much. Normally, people empty their bladders about 6 times a day, the total amount of urine is usually 2 litres a day.
