Using catheters is not a new idea, it has been round for thousands of years, and even the Ancient Greeks used it.
The first known catheters were made of metal and even in gold and silver.
The human body has not changed much over the years and it has always been important not to damage the bladder or its tubes when inserting the catheter. To make it slide in easily, in the old days they used butter, oil and sometimes soft cheese – yuck! The LoFric special slippery surface is much better don’t you think?
In the mid 1900s we started using ‘indwelling’ catheters, these are catheters that stay in the bladder all the time. These were used until it was discovered that these catheters made some people poorly as bacteria (like little bugs) grew faster on them and caused infections.
Today ISC is usually the best method when you need to use a catheter. ISC means that you remove the catheter as soon as you have done a wee, so that the bugs don’t have time to grow.
Astra Tech makes LoFric catheters with the help of special scientists and wee experts so that LoFric has the best surface for you.
