Tests using a type of X-ray called a myelography, or CT or MRI scanning, can reveal the defect if it is not obvious.

Open lesions are usually closed as soon as possible after birth, usually within the first 24 hours. 

The consequences of NTD are individual. In other words, everyone with this condition doesn't suffer all the complications. During the 50's and 60's, only 10% of children with NTD survived their tenth birthday, but today 90% do. 

Improved shunt techniques and intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) of the bladder have greatly improved management of this condition.
